Defendant Caught with 148.05 Grams of Methamphetamine
A Republic, Missouri man was sentenced to 15 years and 8 months in prison for possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute.
According to court documents, William Cruz Martinez, 40, was stopped by a Springfield police officer on October 1, 2013, after his vehicle appeared to be stalled at a flashing red light.
Martinez claimed to be having car trouble, but the officer noticed him appear nervous. When the officer checked his identity information, he told Martinez he was free to leave, but asked if he needed his vehicle towed. Martinez stated he would have a friend come and help him.
As the officer started to walk away, another officer motioned for him to look in the back passenger seat of Martinez’s vehicle. The officer saw a clear plastic bag containing methamphetamine on the passenger side back seat. Martinez grabbed the bag and attempted to hide or destroy it, but officers pulled him out of the vehicle and recovered the bag.
During a search of the vehicle, officers found a lunchbox under the hood, inside the air filter box, containing clear plastic bags with methamphetamine, individually packaged for distribution. A total of 148.05 grams of methamphetamine was seized from Martinez’s vehicle.
Martinez pleaded guilty to the charges on September 28, 2015, and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge M. Douglas Harpool without parole.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Nhan D. Nguyen and investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Springfield, Mo., Police Department.
