Kansas City Man Faces Tax Evasion Charges

A former business owner from Kansas City, Missouri, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for tax evasion. William Fielding Jones, 56, of Clearwater Beach, Florida, was sentenced by U.S. Chief District Judge Greg Kays for failing to pay more than $530,000 in taxes owed.

Jones, who previously owned two companies – SAM Packaging and Mustang Innovation – pleaded guilty on September 4, 2013. He admitted to attempting to evade paying income taxes for tax years 2006-2008, accumulating a tax debt of $530,059.

According to court documents, Jones concealed bank accounts, changed the name of his business, made payments in cash to avoid using bank accounts, and concealed his true financial condition from the government. He did not withhold taxes or make estimated payments from at least 2005 to 2011, despite earning an average annual income of nearly $170,000.

After moving to Florida in 2010, Jones lived in a furnished luxury beach condominium in Clearwater with a rent of $2,900 per month. He also drove a Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac CTS.

The IRS is responsible for collecting $530,059 in restitution. This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathleen D. Mahoney and investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation.

Jones’ sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of tax evasion. The IRS takes tax evasion seriously and will continue to pursue those who attempt to cheat the system.
