Hermitage Man Pleads Guilty to Child Pornography Charges
A disturbing case of child exploitation has unfolded in Hermitage, Tennessee, where 41-year-old William John Patterson has pleaded guilty to distributing child pornography. According to court documents, Patterson’s guilty plea was entered in U.S. District Court in Nashville, Tennessee.
The investigation into Patterson’s activities began on September 9, 2012, when police were called to his home following a report of domestic violence and possession of child pornography. Responding officers from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department obtained and executed search warrants for Patterson’s home and mobile phone.
An analysis of Patterson’s electronic equipment revealed a staggering 7,300 images and approximately 300 videos depicting the sexual exploitation of minor children. Many of the files were hidden in unexpected places on the computer, further indicating Patterson’s attempts to conceal his illicit activities.
The examination of Patterson’s collection revealed that he had been receiving such images since October 2009. The majority of the content consisted of very young girls engaged in sexual activity, including toddlers and young children who were raped and tortured by various methods.
Patterson’s actions have severe consequences, as he now faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. As a first-time offender, he is subject to a minimum mandatory sentence of five years in prison. Patterson is scheduled to be sentenced before U.S. District Court Judge Kevin H. Sharp on September 23, 2013, at 3:30 p.m.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of child exploitation. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, the Dickson County Sheriff’s Office, and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee. Assistant U.S. Attorney S. Carran Daughtrey represented the United States in this case.
As our community continues to grapple with the complexities of child exploitation, it is essential that we remain vigilant in our efforts to protect the most vulnerable among us. The sentencing of William John Patterson will be a crucial step in bringing closure to this case and serving as a deterrent to others who would engage in such heinous activities.
