Local Man Sentenced for Gun and Drug Crimes
Syracuse, NY – William L. Marshall, a 40-year-old Ithaca resident, was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison for his involvement in gun and drug felonies. On August 18, 2021, the City of Ithaca Police Department executed a search warrant at Marshall’s residence, where they seized a stolen Lorcin .380 semiautomatic pistol loaded with seven live rounds and $34,064 in U.S. currency, which was deemed drug proceeds.
Marshall, a prior convicted felon, pleaded guilty to possessing a loaded semiautomatic handgun as a prior convicted felon and possessing marijuana with intent to distribute. He was previously found guilty of the New York State felony of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the First Degree in Tompkins County Court in 2002 and sentenced to serve eight years in prison.
U.S. Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Acting Chief of Police John Joly announced Marshall’s sentence, which also includes a three-year term of supervised release following his release from federal prison.
The case was investigated by the City of Ithaca Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) with assistance from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the New York State Police, and the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Southwick prosecuted the case as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods.
Project Safe Neighborhoods is an evidence-based program designed to reduce violent crime by focusing enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partnering with locally based prevention and reentry programs.
Marshall’s sentence is a result of his involvement in the following crimes:
