ROCKFORD, IL – Willie Evans, 35, of Rockford is headed to federal prison for more than six years after pleading guilty to illegally possessing a firearm while also dealing drugs. U.S. District Judge Philip G. Reinhard handed down the 80-month sentence on Tuesday, sending a clear message that armed felons won’t be tolerated on the streets.
Evans’ downfall began February 23, 2022, when he was found with a loaded handgun – 13 rounds in the magazine, one chambered. But the gun wasn’t the only illegal item in his possession. Authorities also discovered multiple baggies of cocaine and ecstasy, indicating Evans wasn’t just holding the weapon for protection; he was using it to facilitate a drug operation.
The case was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) and the Rockford Police Department, highlighting the ongoing collaboration to combat violent crime in the region. Christopher Amon, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago ATF Field Division, and Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd worked alongside the U.S. Attorney’s Office to build a solid case against Evans.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Theodora Anderson drove home the danger posed by Evans during the sentencing hearing. “Defendant’s offense endangered the community because he was not only illegally in possession of a firearm but was engaged in drug trafficking,” Anderson argued in a sentencing memorandum. “Drug trafficking and gun violence go hand-in-hand and pose a real threat to the community.”
Federal prosecutors are framing Evans’ sentencing as a victory for Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through targeted federal prosecution. Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Morris Pasqual, has made it clear that holding illegal firearm possessors accountable is a top priority.
The sentence serves as a stark warning to others involved in similar activities. Evans, a convicted felon, was legally prohibited from owning a firearm. His attempt to circumvent the law and profit from the dangerous combination of guns and drugs has cost him over six years of his freedom.
