A 29-year-old man from Washington, D.C. has been sentenced to 32 months in prison for a sex assault that left a woman traumatized in Southeast Washington.

On Dec. 12, 2017, Windell Barnes attacked a gas station worker after she dropped off supplies at her workplace. He grabbed the woman, exposing her buttocks, and tried to sexually assault her. The victim was eventually able to escape and run to her car, but Barnes chased after her, attempting to get into her vehicle and further humiliate her.

The victim called police, and the Metropolitan Police Department responded quickly. Barnes was arrested and has been in custody ever since.

Barnes was found guilty of third-degree sexual abuse and indecent exposure in April 2017. He was sentenced by the Honorable Craig Iscoe to 32 months in prison and will be placed on 10 years of supervised release upon his release from prison. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for a 10-year period.

U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu commended the work of the Metropolitan Police Department Sexual Assault Unit and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in investigating and prosecuting the case.

The victim’s courage in coming forward and testifying against Barnes was essential in securing his conviction. The community should be grateful for her bravery and resilience in the face of such trauma.

Barnes’ sentence serves as a reminder that sex crimes will not be tolerated in our city. We must continue to support victims and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
