Bayou La Batre, AL – In a significant crackdown on crime, Winston Alexander Thatch, a resident of Bayou La Batre, has been sentenced to 84 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Kristi K. DuBose, following Thatch’s guilty plea to violating Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(1), Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
According to court documents, the investigation began on November 24, 2021, when Thatch was stopped by a Bayou La Batre police officer for running a stop sign. During the stop, officers discovered a switched tag on the vehicle, a rubber hose in Thatch’s lap, methamphetamine in his pocket, a marijuana blunt in the ashtray, and a loaded revolver in a bag in the vehicle.
The firearm, a High Standard, Double-Nine Convertible, .22 caliber, revolver, was loaded with eight rounds and had an extra cylinder and 67 extra .22 caliber rounds. Additionally, officers found 2.84 grams of crack cocaine, 3.81 grams of methamphetamine, and 22.48 grams of marijuana in the vehicle.
Further investigation revealed that the firearm was stolen from the City of Bayou La Batre. Thatch’s prior felony convictions include Receiving Stolen Property 1st Degree and Assault 2nd Degree, both in the Circuit Court of Mobile County, Alabama, on November 18, 2019.
U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello praised the Bayou La Batre Police Department and the ATF for their outstanding work in investigating and prosecuting the case. He highlighted the danger posed by convicted felons carrying loaded weapons and drugs on public streets and commended the dedicated police work that eradicated the threat in this case.
The case was investigated by the Bayou La Batre Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney George F. May prosecuted the case.
