Wisconsin Man Sentenced for Illegal Firearm Possession

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A Milwaukee, Wis., man, Alexander Laykovich, 27, has been handed a 48-month prison sentence for unlawful firearm possession, marking a significant victory in the battle against illegal weaponry on American streets.

Laykovich, who was under a lifetime prohibition from purchasing firearms due to his adjudication as a mental defective, was nabbed by Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Deputy on January 25, 2024. The deputies discovered eight firearms, including six semiautomatic weapons with large capacity magazines, knives, a gas canister, and ammunition in Laykovich’s possession while en route from Wisconsin to Fort Knox.

Further investigation at his storage unit and delivery boxes in Wisconsin yielded an additional 15 firearms and explosive device components. The plea agreement revealed that the firearms were either purchased prior to Laykovich’s 2023 adjudication or by his girlfriend afterward, despite his knowledge of the prohibition.

Under federal law, Laykovich must serve 85 percent of his sentence before being released under U.S. Probation Office supervision for five years. Acting United States Attorney Paul McCaffrey emphasized the gravity of illegal firearm possession, stating, ‘This case reflects the strong collaboration between our office and our partners in removing illegal firearms from our streets.’

FBI Louisville Field Office Special Agent in Charge Olivia Olson praised law enforcement’s efforts to prevent a potential act of violence against military installations. ‘With this sentence, the defendant has been held accountable for his disregard of the law,’ she said.

The investigation and prosecution were a joint effort by the FBI, ATF, KSP, and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kate Dieruf led the case for the United States. ‘As always, we encourage the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity,’ Olson concluded.
