Sean Swiftbird, Fentanyl Distribution Conspiracy, South Dakota 2024

SIOUX FALLS – In a shocking turn of events, Sean Swiftbird and his mother, Laurie Swiftbird, have been sentenced for their roles in a fentanyl distribution conspiracy that plagued the Sioux Falls area. United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell revealed the sentence on Friday, with Sean, 27, facing 11 years behind bars followed by 5 years of supervised release and a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

His mother, Laurie Swiftbird, aged 67, was also sentenced to two years in federal prison, along with 3 years of supervised release and the same special assessment. The pair were indicted by a federal grand jury for Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance and Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering.

Sean Swiftbird admitted guilt on February 4, 2025, while his mother followed suit on September 6, 2024. Together, they distributed thousands of fentanyl pills in the Sioux Falls area, with Sean working alongside others to traffic the deadly substances. Laurie played a pivotal role by accepting deliveries and selling the drugs.

The Swiftbirds used the Cash App electronic payment system to receive and send proceeds from their illicit activities. The investigation into their scheme was a collaborative effort between Homeland Security Investigations, IRS-Criminal Investigations, and the Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Hodges led the prosecution of this case.

Following the sentencing, Sean Swiftbird was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service. Laurie Swiftbird is expected to turn herself in by January 2026, marking a significant victory for law enforcement in their fight against drug trafficking and financial crimes.
