Woman Charged in $121,734 Social Security Scam
A 66-year-old woman has been charged with stealing $121,734 in Social Security payments meant for a deceased beneficiary, officials said.
Gayle P. Braxton, of Ohio, was indicted by a grand jury on a single count of theft of government property, according to U.S. Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach.
The indictment alleges that Braxton used her joint bank account with the deceased payee to funnel the Social Security payments into her own possession.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Phillip J. Tripi, following an investigation by the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
If convicted, Braxton’s sentence will be determined by the court after review of factors unique to this case, including her prior criminal record, her role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation.
The maximum sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum, and in most cases, it will be less than the maximum.
