Woman Crashes Under Influence, Kills Hubby

Oglala woman Valerie Good Voice Flute, 37, was sentenced to 30 months in custody for involuntary manslaughter in U.S. District Court on November 25, 2014.

Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken handed down the sentence, which includes 3 years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Good Voice Flute was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter after crashing her motor vehicle while under the influence on May 19, 2013, near Loneman, South Dakota. The crash resulted in the death of her husband, Gillard Good Voice Flute.

The U.S. Marshals Service took Good Voice Flute into custody immediately after the sentencing.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich prosecuted the case, which stemmed from a federal grand jury indictment on August 27, 2013. Good Voice Flute had previously pleaded guilty to the charge on July 10, 2014.
