Woman Sentenced for Aiding Stolen Mail
A 26-year-old woman from Missoula, Montana, has been sentenced for her role in receiving stolen mail matter. Cydrea Nicholes was convicted of Aiding and Abetting Receipt of Stolen Mail Matter.
On August 15, 2018, Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court, handed down the sentence. Nicholes was given time served, 2 years of supervised release, a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, and $875 in restitution.
Nicholes was first indicted by a federal grand jury in September 2017. The charge stemmed from a scheme where Nicholes and her co-defendant would steal mail from mailboxes in Montana.
On August 12, 2017, law enforcement stopped Nicholes and her co-defendant in Spearfish. A search of their vehicle revealed multiple cell phones, stolen mail matter, check printing paper, and multiple identification cards belonging to Nicholes and her co-defendant.
The case was investigated by a joint effort between the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the Department of Homeland Security, Missoula, Montana, Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, and the U.S. Postal Service.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Poppen prosecuted the case, securing justice for the victims of the stolen mail matter.
The sentence serves as a reminder that those who engage in such activities will be held accountable for their actions.
