Woolwich Man Guilty of Child Porn Possession
A disturbing case of child exploitation has come to light in Maine, with a local man pleading guilty to possessing images of minors engaged in sex.
Clifton Given, 32, of Woolwich, Maine, admitted to using his cell phone to view images of children engaged in sex. On June 18, 2020, investigators with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) executed a search warrant at Given’s residence, where they found several images and videos on his cell phone depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
Given’s admission and the discovery of the explicit images on his cell phone have sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for tougher laws to protect children from exploitation.
The case was investigated by HSI and the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Given faces a maximum of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and a term of supervised release of at least five years and up to life. He will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office, led by Acting U.S. Attorney Donald E. Clark, has vowed to continue fighting against child exploitation and abuse, saying in a statement that ‘child exploitation is a heinous crime that will not be tolerated’.
The public is urged to report any instances of child exploitation to the authorities, and to remain vigilant in their efforts to protect vulnerable children from harm.
