Westbrook Man Sentenced to 12 ½ Years for Child Porn Possession
A Westbrook man was sentenced to 12 ½ years in prison for possessing child pornography, a crime that not only victimizes children but also perpetuates a cycle of abuse and exploitation.
Chief U.S. District Judge Lance E. Walker handed down the sentence to Michael Peterson, 39, of Westbrook. According to court records, Peterson received and attempted to receive child sexual abuse material using the Telegram application between December 2021 and August 2022.
Peterson received the images from an individual using Telegram and paid the same individual in hopes of obtaining additional images. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Maine State Police investigated the case.
The sentence is a stark reminder of the severity of child pornography crimes, which not only harm children but also perpetuate a culture of exploitation and abuse. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children received 36 million reports of child pornography in 2023 alone.
