Yemeni Man Pleads Guilty to Extortion
BUFFALO, N.Y. – A chilling case of extortion has shaken the community, as Yousef Goba, 44, of Yemen, pleaded guilty to making extortionate threats to harm and kidnap a minor. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy C. Lynch revealed that between February 2015 and April 2015, Goba contacted the victim through telephone and text messages and threatened to kidnap and injure the victim’s minor child, who had gone to Yemen with her mother in September 2013 and lived with Goba for a period of time.
During his stay, Goba had a twisted hold on the minor child and her family, refusing to let the child leave and even threatening to have her marry a Yemeni man if money was not paid to him. On April 8, 2015, a recorded call by the FBI caught Goba demanding $11,000 as well as money for other expenses for the release of the minor child.
The plea is the result of an investigation by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Gary Loeffert. Sentencing is scheduled for October 29, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. before Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo.
U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. announced the guilty plea, highlighting the severity of the crime and the potential consequences for Goba. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of extortion and the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals, particularly children.
The community is breathing a sigh of relief as the guilty plea brings an end to the ordeal, but the impact on the victim and her family will be long-lasting. As the case moves forward, the focus will shift to sentencing, where Goba will face the consequences of his actions.
