NORFOLK, Va. – In a harrowing case of gang-related violence, Tamarrea Deyon Walker, 25, from Suffolk, Virginia, was today sentenced to 70 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
G. Zachary Terwilliger, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, emphasized the severity of gang activity on local communities, stating that ‘depravity and violence follow gang activity’ and thanking law enforcement partners for their efforts in this case.
According to court documents, Walker is a member of the Suffolk-based criminal street gang “YNGI.” In April 2019, Walker and another YNGI member engaged in a shootout with rival gang members. The chase ended in a head-on collision after a high-speed pursuit involving gunshots.
Martin Culbreth, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Norfolk Field Office, highlighted the importance of law enforcement cooperation in tackling gang violence. He commended the Tidewater Violent Crimes Task Force for their commitment to reducing violent crime in Hampton Roads.
At the accident scene, officers found Walker rummaging through a vehicle and discovered an extended 9mm magazine on the ground near him. They also recovered more than 30 grams of heroin and four firearms, including a Masterpiece Arms 9mm handgun that was recently posted on Walker’s Instagram account.
Chief of Police Alfred Chandler for the City of Suffolk noted the case as a reminder of the violence caused by criminal street gangs and praised the collaborative efforts of federal, state, and local law enforcement in bringing Walker to justice. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) and Project Guardian, initiatives aimed at reducing violent crime and enforcing firearms laws.
