Minneapolis Man Sentenced to 70 Months in Prison for Leading Tax Fraud Scheme
A Minneapolis man has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for his role in a multi-year tax fraud scheme that netted over $1.7 million in false refunds.
According to court documents, Yossimar Alarcon-Patino, 25, directed a conspiracy to obtain tax refunds by filing false income tax returns. The scheme, which began in 2010, involved Alarcon-Patino and several co-conspirators filing false returns that reported false income and claimed fictitious dependents.
Alarcon-Patino, who obtained fake identification documents to obtain false Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs), paid co-conspirator Seth Mogollon-Flores $100 for each W-2 form he provided. Mogollon-Flores, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Co-conspirator Maria Teresita Alvarez-Mateos, 41, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States and was sentenced to 24 months in prison. Yuliana Alvarez-Mateos, 30, pleaded guilty to making a materially false statement to federal agents and was sentenced to two years’ probation.
The investigation, which was led by the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Division, Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and U.S. Department of the Treasury – Office of the Inspector General, uncovered a complex scheme that involved the use of fake identification documents and false W-2 forms to claim false refunds.
Assistant U.S. Attorney William Otteson prosecuted the case, which resulted in over $1.7 million in restitution being ordered for the Internal Revenue Service.
Alarcon-Patino’s sentence marks the latest development in a case that has exposed a sophisticated tax fraud scheme in Minnesota. The case serves as a reminder to taxpayers of the importance of reporting accurate income and claiming legitimate tax credits.
