Daron Nesbitt, Heroin and MDMA Trafficking, Ohio 2014

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Daron Nesbitt, 35, is facing a federal indictment for a string of drug and weapons offenses, federal authorities announced today. The Youngstown resident is accused of peddling heroin and MDMA, while simultaneously illegally possessing firearms despite a lengthy rap sheet.

According to the indictment, returned by a federal grand jury, Nesbitt allegedly distributed heroin and MDMA on or around October 20, 2014, and again on November 5, 2014. The charges don’t stop there. On November 12, 2014, Nesbitt is alleged to have possessed with intent to distribute a cocktail of narcotics including heroin, cocaine, MDMA, and marijuana.

But the feds aren’t just coming after him for the drugs. Count four of the indictment lays out the firearms charges: Nesbitt allegedly possessed a Raven Arms, model P25, .25 caliber pistol, and a Walther, model P22, .22 caliber pistol, along with ammunition. This is particularly damning given his prior convictions. Nesbitt has previously been convicted of felonious assault in Mahoning County, Ohio, and trafficking in drugs in both Columbiana and Trumbull Counties, Ohio – rendering him legally prohibited from owning firearms.

United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Steven M. Dettelbach, stated the case was built through a joint investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Mahoning Valley Law Enforcement Task Force. Assistant United States Attorney David M. Toepfer is prosecuting the matter. If convicted, the sentencing will be determined by the court, taking into account Nesbitt’s criminal history and the specifics of the offenses.

While the indictment lays out a strong case, authorities are quick to point out that it is merely an accusation. Nesbitt is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. He is entitled to a fair trial where the government bears the burden of proof. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it progresses through the federal court system.

The details of any potential sentencing remain unclear, but federal penalties for drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession can be substantial. Nesbitt’s prior convictions will undoubtedly weigh heavily on any potential sentence handed down by the judge. This case serves as a stark reminder that those who choose to deal drugs and wield illegal weapons in the Northern District of Ohio will face the full force of federal prosecution.
