LeBron Charles Bunkley, a 37-year-old man from Youngstown, Ohio, has pleaded guilty in the Northern District of Ohio for selling heroin that led to a fatal overdose. The grim case came to light when J.P., a victim identified only by initials, was found dead in a vacant lot on May 15, holding a hypodermic needle and having made his last call to Bunkley.
Law enforcement executed a search warrant at Bunkley’s residence, discovering 286 grams of heroin, 345 grams of powder cocaine, 84 grams of crack cocaine, two firearms, and ammunition. The evidence was enough for Bunkley to admit to distributing heroin, cocaine, and crack cocaine, as well as being a felon in possession of firearms and using them in the drug trade.
Bunkley is facing a federal sentence between 21 and 27 years, as dictated by court documents outlining sentencing guidelines. The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Carole S. Rendon, emphasized the necessity of aggressive enforcement in combating the heroin epidemic, stating, “We will continue to prosecute dealers who sell heroin that kills our neighbors.”
The investigation was a collaborative effort by the Mahoning Valley Law Enforcement Task Force, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney David M. Toepfer is handling the prosecution. Bunkley is set for sentencing on February 7.
Rendon concluded with a commitment to a comprehensive strategy that includes aggressive enforcement along with treatment, education, and changing prescribing practices to address the broader issue of drug abuse in the community.
