Jerry J. Davis Jr., Cocaine Trafficking, Ohio 2024

A Summit County man is facing federal charges after nearly 80 pounds of cocaine and multiple loaded firearms were seized in a violent arrest and coordinated raid. Jerry J. Davis, Jr., 35, of New Franklin, was indicted on five counts including possession with intent to distribute cocaine and illegal firearm possession, following a high-speed chase and crash in Akron on November 1.

Davis was pulled over by Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers and Akron Police Department officers around midday. Instead of complying, he fled, leading authorities on a dangerous pursuit before slamming his vehicle into a light pole. He fled on foot, then jumped from a bridge—plummeting 30 feet—before being apprehended, according to court documents.

Inside Davis’s wrecked car, officers found nearly 11 kilograms of cocaine and a loaded Glock .40-caliber handgun. Later that day, a search warrant executed at his New Franklin residence by the Summit County Drug Unit, DEA, FBI, and Akron Police uncovered another 25 kilograms of cocaine, two handguns—a Glock .40 model 30 and a Springfield .45-caliber—ammunition, and $67,658 in cash.

Davis is legally prohibited from possessing firearms due to prior felony convictions for sexual battery, heroin possession, and other offenses. He now faces two counts of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, two counts of firearm possession in furtherance of drug trafficking, and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

“This investigation is a great example of law enforcement working together to get drugs and guns off the streets,” said U.S. Attorney Carole S. Rendon. Akron Police Chief James Nice echoed the sentiment, stating, “Our working relationships with our state, local and federal partners continue to benefit the City of Akron in successes such as this.”

Timothy Plancon, Special Agent in Charge of DEA’s Detroit Office, emphasized the scale of the seizure: “The seizure of 36 kilograms is significant… Halting the activities of a large-scale, gun-toting, cocaine trafficker is a victory for the citizens of Akron.” The case was investigated by Akron Narcotics, DEA, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and FBI, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron P. Howell. An indictment is not evidence of guilt; Davis is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
