Felon in Possession of Ammunition Lands 15-Month Sentence
DAVENPORT, IA – In a shocking turn of events, 56-year-old Yusuf Hasan Shariff was sentenced to 15 months in prison for being a felon in possession of ammunition.
According to reports, Shariff was unable to pay for gasoline at a local gas station on April 13, 2012. When deputies arrived, Shariff handed a .32 caliber bullet to one of the deputies, stating, ". . . let’s take this to the next level." This act led to a series of violent incidents involving Shariff.
On April 17, 2012, a Davenport police officer conducted a traffic stop of a mini-van driven by Shariff. The vehicle crashed into a retaining wall near Genesis West in Davenport. When approached by police, Shariff refused orders to remain still and physically struggled with officers. In the process, he obtained control of a knife and stabbed at the police officers.
Shariff, a previously convicted felon, was found to be in possession of 15 rounds of .32 caliber ammunition at his Davenport residence on April 19, 2012. He pleaded guilty to the charge on October 22, 2012, and was subsequently sentenced by United States District Court Judge John A. Jarvey.
Shariff will serve 15 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and must pay $100 towards the Crime Victims Fund.
Shariff’s case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Davenport Police Department, and the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, and was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative.
