Million-Dollar Mail Credit Card Scam Unfolds in Houston
HOUSTON – In a shocking revelation, two men have been convicted of orchestrating a large-scale mail theft and credit card fraud scheme, causing losses to the tune of $1 million to Chase Bank.
Bradley Kane Zarco, 39, and Travis Castaneda Qawasmeh, 28, both residents of Houston, admitted to obtaining stolen U.S. mail containing new credit cards and bank statements for intended account holders. The duo took it upon themselves to activate the stolen credit cards, increasing credit limits and changing information to further their nefarious activities.
The duo’s actions led to the fraudulent activation of at least 120 stolen credit cards. They used these cards to purchase goods, services, gift cards, cash, and merchandise at retail stores, causing significant financial losses to Chase Bank over a six-month period.
Three others, Christopher McGee, Daniel Sanchez, and Nigerian citizen Omokehinde Muyiwa Oyegoke-Tewogbade, had previously pleaded guilty to the same charges. McGee admitted to one count of aggravated identity theft, which carries a mandatory two-year prison sentence to be served consecutively to any other prison term imposed.
Sanchez has already been sentenced to 41 months in prison in February. The conspiracy charge against Zarco and Qawasmeh carries a maximum five-year prison term and a potential fine of up to $1 million.
U.S. District Judge Andrew S. Hanen accepted the pleas and set sentencing for Aug. 11. With the exception of Qawasmeh, who was permitted to remain on bond, all others have been and will remain in custody.
The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Lansden handling the prosecution of the case.
