$2.8 Million Medicaid Scam Lands VA Woman in Hot Water
A Texas woman has pleaded guilty to defrauding the Virginia Medicaid Program out of $2.8 million, a staggering sum that could have funded vital healthcare services for thousands of low-income residents.
Katrina Lynch, 39, of Cypress, owned and operated A Tender Heart, LLC, a company based in Midlothian, which was enrolled with the Virginia Medicaid Program as a Service Facilitator. Between 2011 and 2018, Lynch routinely submitted bills to Medicaid for services that her company never provided.
The brazen scheme involved submitting claims for services supposedly provided to Medicaid recipients who had died, were hospitalized, or had transferred to other Service Facilitators. In some cases, Lynch even billed Medicaid for services that had not been visited by her company employees for months.
Lynch’s guilty plea marks a significant setback for the Texas woman, who faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison when she is sentenced on December 1. The actual sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge, who will take into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The investigation into Lynch’s Medicaid scam was a collaborative effort involving the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, the Virginia Attorney General’s Office, and the FBI’s Richmond Field Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Katherine Lee Martin is prosecuting the case.
The case highlights the importance of ensuring that Medicaid providers are held accountable for their actions. The program is a vital lifeline for low-income residents, and any abuse of the system can have devastating consequences for those who rely on it.
