Two New Orleans men are behind bars on more than 650 combined counts of child pornography, arrested in a sweeping cybercrime crackdown led by Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry. The charges expose a grotesque digital trail of exploitation involving victims under the age of 13, law enforcement confirmed Tuesday.
Melvin Newman, 58, was hit with 500 counts of Possession of Pornography Involving Juveniles (under the age of 13) and five counts of Distribution of the same. Authorities say digital evidence seized during the investigation points to a years-long pattern of deliberate, calculated collection and sharing of the most depraved material imaginable. Newman was booked into Orleans Parish Prison without bond.
Lawrence Jones, 23, faces 150 counts of Possession of Pornography Involving Juveniles (under the age of 13). Investigators say Jones accessed and stored child abuse material across multiple devices, linking him directly to online networks where such content is traded like currency. He was also booked into Orleans Parish Prison.
The arrests stemmed from a joint operation involving Attorney General Jeff Landry’s Cyber Crime Unit, the New Orleans Police Department Child Abuse Unit, Louisiana State Police Special Victims Unit, and Homeland Security Investigations. Officials emphasized that none of the victims are identified publicly, but all were minors at the time the material was created—some infants.
“Child exploitation is real and appalling,” Attorney General Jeff Landry said. “My office is committed to taking those who prey on our innocent youth off the streets.” His Cyber Crime Unit has prosecuted thousands of computer-facilitated crimes against children ranging from infants to 16-year-olds.
