Yoni Duenas, a 28-year-old from Sioux City, Iowa, was busted on January 2, 2026, just before midnight, when a Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputy pulled him over for an equipment violation. Duenas was impaired, even losing consciousness during field sobriety tests, and a search of his car revealed an overpowering odor of marijuana, a female passenger, two young children, marijuana, methamphetamine, and a loaded handgun.
Duenas has a long history of run-ins with the law, including three state convictions for possession of controlled substances and five criminal use or possession of a firearm offenses. He had previously been convicted of a federal felony for possessing multiple firearms and had served time in federal prison.
Despite being required to serve a term of supervised release after his first federal sentence, Duenas failed to comply and was sent back to federal prison three times. Just 38 days after completing his sentence, he was arrested again by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. On July 23, 2026, Duenas was sentenced to 72 months in federal prison for his latest crime.
Duenas was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand and will also have to serve a 3-year term of supervised release after his prison term. The case was investigated by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department and the ATF, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild.
