Two Rapid City men have been sentenced for their roles in a marijuana trafficking operation that spanned multiple states.
According to court documents, Cayleb Louis Young, 23, and Kenneth Morales-Scott, Jr., 24, both of Rapid City, South Dakota, were involved in a plot to transport over 10 pounds of marijuana from California to Wisconsin.
On November 17, 2012, Morales-Scott and Young traveled from Rapid City to California, where Morales-Scott picked up the large quantity of marijuana. Young agreed to assist in the transportation and delivery of the marijuana in exchange for a portion of the proceeds.
The next day, the South Dakota Highway Patrol performed a traffic stop on Interstate 90 near Draper, and a search of the vehicle revealed several vacuum-sealed bags containing high-quality marijuana.
Morales-Scott and Young were subsequently arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Morales-Scott pleaded guilty on June 4, 2013, and Young followed suit on the same day.
U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange sentenced Morales-Scott to 1 month of imprisonment, followed by 5 months of home confinement, and 2 years of supervised release. He also forfeited a 1997 BMW. Young, on the other hand, received 2 years of probation and was fined $1,000, with an additional $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The investigation was conducted by the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller prosecuted the case.
Morales-Scott is set to report to the U.S. Marshals Service in Rapid City on August 30, 2013, to begin serving his sentence.
