Manhattan Federal Court Sees Guilty Plea
Fabio Porfirio Lobo, son of Honduras’ former President Porfirio Lobo, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to import cocaine into the United States.
Lobo, 44, was arrested in Haiti on May 20, 2015, and extradited to the US. He appeared before U.S. District Judge Lorna G. Schofield in Manhattan federal court.
According to the indictment, Lobo agreed to assist two Mexican drug traffickers in transporting a multi-ton load of cocaine through Honduras in 2014. In exchange for his services, Lobo was to receive a financial interest in the cocaine, which was intended to be sold and distributed in the US.
Lobo’s cooperation with the traffickers included introducing them to Honduran police officials who agreed to provide security and logistical support for the transportation of the cocaine through Honduras. The officials’ involvement was a critical component of the conspiracy, as it allowed the cocaine to be successfully transported through the country.
During consensually recorded calls and emails between Lobo and one of the traffickers, Lobo agreed to travel to Haiti to receive payment from the proceeds of the cocaine transaction. He was subsequently arrested in Haiti and extradited to the US.
Lobo pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to import five or more kilograms of cocaine into the US, as well as distribute the same. The charge carries a maximum term of life in prison and a mandatory minimum term of 10 years in prison.
Lobo will be sentenced on September 15, 2016, by Judge Schofield. Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara praised the DEA’s Special Operations Division for their role in the case, as well as the DEA’s Port-au-Prince Country Office, the Government of Haiti, and the U.S. Office of International Affairs for their assistance.
The case is being handled by the Office’s Terrorism and International Narcotics Unit, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Emil J. Bove III, Matthew J. Laroche, and Michael D. Lockard leading the prosecution.
