Telemarketing Scam Sentences 5

Grimy Times has learned that a group of five individuals have been sentenced in federal court for their roles in a massive payment-processing scheme that supported telemarketing call centers throughout the country.

The scheme, which defrauded over $9 million from victims, involved the sale of fraudulent products, including information guaranteeing government grants, business opportunities, and “Amazon rooms and accompanying advertising.”

The mastermind behind the scheme, Chad Gettel, 43, of Salt Lake City, was sentenced to seven years in federal prison, a sentence that will run concurrent to a sentence he received in the CC Brown case. Gettel was also ordered to pay $558,837.00 in restitution.

Gettel’s co-conspirators, Jamie White, 41, of St. George, and Peter Ian Seldin, 51, of Miami, Florida, were each sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for their roles in the fraud scheme. William B. Rogers, 39, of Salt Lake City, was sentenced to 12 months in prison, while Parker Crow, 26, of St. George, was sentenced to five years of probation.

The scheme involved convincing individuals to open Limited Liability Companies (“LLCs”) and bank accounts in those company names in order to obtain merchant accounts that were used to process the funds from the telemarketing rooms. The individuals, known as nominees, were unaware that telemarketing was involved and that the sales were fraudulent.

The merchants accounts enabled the telemarketers to capture, authorize, and process credit card account transactions; settle credit card transactions pursuant to merchant account agreements; and ultimately receive deposits from settled credit card transactions.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case, which was investigated by special agents of the FBI and IRS Criminal Investigation Division.
