NY AG James Blasts Trump’s Move to Halt Gender-Affirming Care

New York – In a fiery rebuke to the Trump administration, Attorney General Letitia James has decried a proposed initiative aimed at severely limiting access to gender-affirming care for young people. The proposal, which includes cutting federal reimbursement for youth gender-affirming services and blocking Medicaid and Medicare funding to hospitals providing pediatric gender-affirming care, was met with swift opposition by the top legal official in New York.

‘This president would rather target young people than lower costs or expand access to health care. It is reprehensible that our federal government is intent on hurting and isolating the adolescents it is supposed to protect,’ James stated.

James has been a staunch advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, leading a coalition of 15 states and Washington D.C. in a lawsuit against the Trump administration over similar attacks on transgender youth’s healthcare access. In August, she also joined an amicus brief opposing the DOJ’s demand for patient records from Boston Children’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

In February, James sent a warning to New York providers that denying necessary healthcare to transgender patients based on their protected status may violate state anti-discrimination laws. Her office’s website offers more information on gender-affirming care protections in New York.

The Attorney General has made it clear that she will use every available tool to combat this proposal, ensuring the protection of transgender Americans and their families against such harmful initiatives.
