NY AG Sues Trump Admin Over NSF Cuts

New York – In a bold legal move, New York Attorney General Letitia James has joined forces with 15 other state attorneys general to sue the Trump administration for its illegal attempts to slash critical National Science Foundation (NSF) programs.

The lawsuit targets the administration’s moves on April 18th to terminate projects enhancing diversity in STEM fields and a May 2nd decision to cap indirect research costs at 15 percent, threatening millions in funding and national security.

“Our online lives, from barcode scanning to MRI technology, are powered by NSF-funded science,” AG James stated. “The administration’s assault on fundamental science and diversity efforts undermines our economy and national defense.”

NSF, established in 1950, has been a cornerstone of U.S. leadership in STEM. Its focus on diversifying the field saw women’s participation in science and engineering occupations double from 1995 to 2017, with people of color increasing from 15 to 35 percent.

The coalition argues that the NSF’s April directive canceled dozens of programs, including $11 million in CUNY-funded initiatives in New York. SUNY campuses face a similar fate, as they stand to lose over $104 million in critical funding for research like microelectronics and climate science.

Attorney General James and the coalition are seeking a court order to block these damaging directives and preserve crucial scientific research and education programs.
