Trump Administration Faces Legal Challenge Over Health Funding Cuts

New York – In a dramatic turn of events, New York Attorney General Letitia James and a coalition of 22 other states joined forces to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration. The legal action targets the abrupt and unlawful slashing of billions in state health funding.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced on March 24 that it would recoup over $11 billion, including nearly $400 million for New York, from public health, mental health, and addiction initiatives. Attorney General James asserts these cuts are illegal, threatening public health and community well-being.

‘The Trump administration’s illegal and irresponsible decision to claw back life-saving health funding is an attack on the well-being of millions of Americans,’ said Attorney General James. ‘This heartless move will reverse our progress on the opioid crisis and mental health systems, leaving hospitals struggling to care for patients.’

The lawsuit claims that failure to restore funding will lead to the dissolution of key public health programs and job losses across the country. The terminated funds were allocated by Congress during the COVID-19 pandemic, including $11.4 billion from the CDC for pandemic preparedness and $1 billion from SAMHSA for addiction treatment.

The coalition warns that these cuts will cause immediate and irreparable damage, including the termination of harm reduction services, medication-assisted recovery treatments, and overdose reversal drugs. They also highlight the risk to mental health care during a national crisis and the potential closure of hospitals due to staffing shortages.

In New York, the $400 million cut has led to layoffs of at least 23 public health employees and impacted over 200 local organizations. The New York State Department of Health (DOH) has had to halt programs addressing health disparities and LGBTQ+ and immigrant issues.
