Waterloo Felon Sentenced to Four Years for Illegal Gun Possession

Waterloo, Iowa – A brazen attempt to evade law enforcement by a convicted felon has led to a hefty sentence. Ted Alfonso Scott, Jr., 23, was sentenced on April 25, 2014, to nearly four years in federal prison for unlawful gun possession.

The incident began in December 2013 when the Waterloo Police Department responded to reports of shots fired. Officer’s responding to the scene encountered Scott running from the area, armed with a 9mm pistol. A high-speed chase ensued as Scott fled up the exterior staircase of an apartment building while wielding the firearm.

Scott was eventually apprehended and confessed to carrying the weapon. Additionally, he admitted to possessing another firearm, which police discovered in a garage in July 2013. His criminal history included a previous conviction for Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Deliver in Black Hawk County in 2011, and Scott had a known association with local gangs.

The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade in Cedar Rapids, with Scott receiving 46 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $100 was also imposed, and he will be required to serve a three-year term of supervised release following his prison term.

Scott is currently in the custody of the United States Marshal’s Service pending transport to a federal prison facility. The case against him was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Justin Lightfoot, with the Waterloo Police Department’s Violent Crime Apprehension Team (VCAT) and Watch III patrol leading the investigation.
