Albuquerque Drug Kingpin Pleads Guilty to Meth Distribution

ALBUQUERQUE – Lawrence Anthony Martinez, a 39-year-old Albuquerque native, faced the federal bench today after admitting his role in methamphetamine distribution. The defendant, who was arrested on April 7, 2014, pleaded guilty to charges of meth trafficking, following a tumultuous history with the law.

Martinez’s descent into criminal activity began when he was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition back in January 2014. Albuquerque Police Department (APD) officers made the grim discovery during a child welfare check at Martinez’s residence, where they found a pistol and methamphetamine.

His legal woes intensified on April 9, 2014, when he was indicted on multiple charges, including being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, and using a firearm in relation to drug trafficking. Martinez’s prior record was lengthy and included offenses such as possession of a controlled substance, aggravated battery, burglary, stealing a motor vehicle, receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle, larceny, and fleeing a law enforcement officer.

Today, the court heard Martinez admit guilt on Count 2 of his indictment, confessing to possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute it for monetary gain. The defendant remains in custody ahead of his sentencing hearing, which has not been scheduled yet.

This case was the result of a joint investigation by the Albuquerque office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and APD. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jon K. Stanford is handling the prosecution. The case is part of a federal anti-violence initiative targeting repeat offenders for federal prosecution to keep them out of New Mexico communities.

Lawrence Martinez’s guilty plea underscores the government’s commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and keeping dangerous individuals off the streets.
