Madison Man McClendon Jailed for Illegal Gun Possession
MADISON, IL – Dexter L. McClendon, 26, is heading to federal prison after being sentenced Friday for illegally possessing a firearm. The case, prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois, highlights the continued crackdown on individuals prohibited from owning weapons due to prior criminal activity.
McClendon received a 6-month prison sentence, followed by a 12-month period of home confinement, after being convicted on one count of Possession of a Weapon by a Prohibited Person. United States Attorney Stephen R. Wigginton announced the sentencing, a clear message that possessing firearms while legally barred carries significant consequences.
The origins of the case trace back to July 28, 2014, when investigators discovered McClendon in possession of a 7.62 caliber rifle. Crucially, his past brushes with the law disqualified him from legally owning any firearms. He had previously been convicted of a misdemeanor Domestic Battery offense, automatically triggering the prohibition.
Federal authorities aren’t letting past domestic violence convictions slide. This isn’t about taking guns from law-abiding citizens; it’s about keeping weapons out of the hands of those who have demonstrated a propensity for violence, even at the misdemeanor level. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) led the investigation, meticulously building the case against McClendon.
Assistant United States Attorney Laura Reppert skillfully prosecuted the case, presenting the evidence that ultimately led to the conviction and subsequent sentencing. The ATF’s work, combined with Reppert’s legal expertise, ensured that McClendon was held accountable for his actions. The 7.62 caliber rifle is now in federal custody.
While six months may seem like a relatively short sentence, the 12 months of home confinement adds another layer of accountability. This case serves as a stark reminder that even misdemeanor convictions can have long-lasting consequences, especially when it comes to Second Amendment rights.
