Felon Gregory Sentenced to 20 Years for Straw Purchasing Guns in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, MD – U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz today locked up Jeffrey Gregory for 20 years over his illegal firearm straw purchasing activities, a criminal enterprise that has landed him in hot water with the law once more.

Gregory, 48, of Sparks, Maryland, was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release after completing his prison term. The sentence, handed down by Judge Motz, is the culmination of a scheme where Gregory, a convicted felon banned from possessing firearms, used another individual to purchase guns for him on three separate occasions between January 2008 and March 2009.

According to U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein and his team, Gregory’s co-conspirator executed ‘straw purchases’ at gun stores, filling out ATF Form 4473 with false statements that indicated she was the actual buyer. Gregory paid for the guns and directed his co-conspirator to act as the purchaser to circumvent the law. One of the firearms purchased in this manner was later used in a murder investigation in Baltimore County.

Gregory’s criminal history is extensive, with previous sentences for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. In 2008, he faced an unrelated conviction after brandishing a handgun during a York Road restaurant altercation.

Rod Rosenstein praised the ATF, Baltimore County Police Department, and Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office for their role in the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael C. Hanlon and Piper F. McKeithen led the prosecution of Gregory.
