Justin James Walker Sentenced to 10 Years for Illegal Possession of…

MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – Justin James Walker, 28, of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, is headed for a decade behind bars after being sentenced to 120 months imprisonment for the illegal possession of a stolen firearm. The sentence was handed down today by District Judge Ronald A. White in Muskogee, concluding a case that stretches back over a decade.

Walker was convicted on charges stemming from a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(j) – specifically, possession of a stolen firearm. The investigation, a joint effort between the Tahlequah Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), revealed that Walker knowingly possessed a weapon that had been transported across state lines.

The indictment alleged that on or about August 25, 2012, Walker received, concealed, stored, bartered, sold or disposed of a Mossberg Model 500ATP, 12 Gauge Shotgun, bearing serial number Jl50578. This shotgun, investigators determined, had been shipped or transported in interstate commerce before being stolen. Walker was initially indicted in January 2013, but the case dragged on for years before he ultimately pled guilty in October 2013.

The delay in sentencing, a common occurrence in the overburdened federal system, doesn’t diminish the severity of the crime. Possession of stolen firearms fuels the black market and puts dangerous weapons in the hands of those who shouldn’t have them. This conviction sends a clear message: illegally handling stolen guns carries serious consequences.

Following the sentencing hearing, Walker was immediately taken into custody by the United States Marshal Service. He will be transported to a designated federal prison to begin serving his non-parolable sentence, meaning he will not be eligible for early release. Assistant United States Attorney Kyle Waters successfully prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.

Grimy Times will continue to follow federal cases in Oklahoma and across the nation, exposing the underbelly of crime and holding those responsible accountable. This case underscores the importance of collaboration between local and federal law enforcement agencies in dismantling criminal networks and keeping our communities safe.
