Las Cruces Man Pleads Guilty to Meth, Heroin Trafficking

Jimmy Alex Barela, Jr., 38, of Las Cruces, N.M., pleaded guilty today in federal court to possession of methamphetamine and heroin with intent to distribute — a high-stakes drug charge that exposes him to a mandatory minimum of ten years and up to life behind bars. The plea was entered without a deal, meaning Barela faces the full wrath of federal sentencing guidelines.

Barela was arrested on September 30, 2016, following a traffic stop and subsequent search of his vehicle and residence in Dona Ana County. Law enforcement agents seized 425.5 grams of methamphetamine and 95.6 grams of heroin — a lethal combination that underscores the escalating opioid and stimulant crisis gripping southern New Mexico. The drugs were uncovered during a coordinated raid led by federal and local task force units.

No plea agreement shields Barela from maximum penalties. At sentencing, which remains unscheduled, he will confront a judicial system cracking down on narcotics traffickers feeding addiction in vulnerable communities. He remains in federal custody, with no chance of bond as the court prepares to deliver what could be a life-shattering sentence.

The investigation was spearheaded by the Las Cruces DEA office and the HIDTA Regional Interagency Drug Task Force — also known as the Metro Narcotics Task Force — a multi-agency coalition including the Las Cruces Police Department, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, FBI, HSI, and New Mexico State Police. The High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program, established by Congress in 1988, targets hot zones of narcotics distribution with enhanced resources and intelligence sharing.

This case falls under the New Mexico Heroin and Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Initiative, launched in 2015 by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and UNM Health Sciences Center to combat the state’s devastating opioid epidemic. HOPE unites law enforcement, public health, and community groups to attack the crisis through prevention, treatment, prosecution, and reentry. Barela’s prosecution is a direct hit under HOPE’s law enforcement arm, which targets major drug traffickers.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark A. Saltman of the Las Cruces Branch Office is handling the prosecution. With New Mexico enduring some of the highest opioid-related death rates in the nation, cases like Barela’s are not just criminal matters — they’re public health battlegrounds.
