Nicholaus Tripp, 28, of Spearfish, South Dakota, is behind bars on federal charges after authorities say he used the internet to attempt to lure a minor for sex. Arrested December 23, 2016, Tripp faces one count of Attempted Enticement of a Minor Using the Internet (18 USC 2422(b)), a charge carrying a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and up to life if convicted.
The arrest was the result of a coordinated sting by the South Dakota Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the Division of Criminal Investigation, Spearfish Police Department, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Police Department, and Homeland Security Investigations. Authorities say Tripp initiated contact with what he believed was a minor through an online platform, engaging in sexually explicit conversation and making plans to meet.
Tripp made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daneta Wollmann on December 27, 2016. He entered a plea of not guilty. Federal prosecutors wasted no time securing his detention, citing the seriousness of the allegations and the potential risk to the community.
The charge stems from digital evidence gathered during the investigation, which included chat logs, IP address tracking, and undercover operations. Investigators say Tripp took deliberate steps to conceal his identity but was ultimately traced through digital footprints left during the exchanges.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Collins is leading the prosecution. A trial date has been set for February 28, 2017, in U.S. District Court. If found guilty, Tripp will face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years without parole, with the possibility of life behind bars.
The case underscores the growing reach of online predator investigations in rural states like South Dakota. Authorities stress that Tripp is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but the charges paint a damning picture of a man who allegedly used the anonymity of the web to target children. The investigation remains active as law enforcement reviews digital devices seized during the arrest.
