Blacksburg Man Pleads Guilty to Selling Cocaine, Gun

Blacksburg man Matthew Jeremey Holland, 23, admitted in federal court today to dealing cocaine and illegally wielding a firearm — a lethal combo that landed him face-to-face with federal prosecutors in Roanoke. Holland pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of cocaine and one count of possessing a firearm as a previously convicted felon, according to U.S. Attorney John P. Fishwick Jr.

The charges stem from a sting operation led by the New River Regional Drug Task Force, during which Holland attempted to sell both a quantity of cocaine and a firearm to a confidential informant. The transaction, caught on law enforcement recordings, unfolded under the watchful eye of investigators who had been monitoring Holland’s illicit activities for weeks.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Bassford presented evidence at the hearing detailing how Holland, already barred from possessing firearms due to prior conviction, showed no hesitation when brokering the sale. Federal authorities moved swiftly, arresting him before the deal could escalate into more dangerous territory.

“Drugs and guns are a deadly combination,” Fishwick declared outside the courthouse. “We will continue to work to make our communities safer by ridding them of illegal drugs and taking guns out of the hands of prohibited users like Mr. Holland.”

The investigation was jointly conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the New River Regional Drug Task Force, whose undercover work proved pivotal in securing the conviction. Holland now faces mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines, with a formal sentencing date to be set by the court.

Holland remains in federal custody pending sentencing. The case underscores ongoing federal efforts to dismantle local drug networks and intercept illegal firearms before they fuel violence across Southwest Virginia.
