Darrick Thomas Brown, 38, of Sedalia, Mo., is behind bars for seven years without parole after being caught with a loaded Hi-Point .40-caliber pistol in a motel room where shots had just been fired. Federal prosecutors secured the conviction in the Western District of Missouri, underscoring the dangerous reality of armed felons walking the streets under state supervision.
On Feb. 28, 2016, Pettis County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Super 7 Motel following reports of gunfire. They found Brown exiting a motel room, with a gun lying in plain view on the bedroom floor. Shell casings and ballistic evidence showed two shots had been fired — one bullet slicing through a microwave before embedding in the wall, the other striking the top of an entertainment center. Two young children were in the adjacent room at the time.
Brown pleaded guilty on Aug. 10, 2016, to being a felon in possession of a firearm, a charge that carries stiff penalties under federal law. He admitted to having the weapon during the incident, despite a long criminal record that legally bars him from owning or handling any gun or ammunition. His rap sheet includes prior felony convictions for distributing controlled substances, failure to appear, fleeing the scene of an accident, resisting arrest, assault, drug possession, and endangering the welfare of a child.
The case unfolded while Brown was on state parole — a fact that federal prosecutors emphasized in court. U.S. District Judge Brian C. Wimes handed down the seven-year sentence, citing Brown’s repeated violations of public trust and his documented ties to a Sedalia street gang. Court documents confirm Brown is an active participant in organized street activity, further escalating the threat level of his firearm possession.
Substance abuse has long played a role in Brown’s criminal behavior. According to investigative records, he has a history of heavy drug use, including chronic consumption of marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamine — substances that likely fueled the volatile incident at the motel. That context was presented during sentencing to illustrate a pattern of escalating violence and disregard for human safety.
The investigation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Pettis County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Lynn prosecuted the case, calling it a clear example of how illegal firearms in the hands of violent felons endanger entire communities. Brown will serve his sentence in federal prison with no chance for early release.
