COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA – Gerald N. Holden, a 42-year-old resident of Bellevue, Nebraska, will spend the next 13 years and 4 months behind bars after being sentenced to 160 months in prison for conspiring to distribute methamphetamine. The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Rebecca Goodgame Ebinger on April 6, 2017, according to United States Attorney Kevin E. VanderSchel.
Holden’s downfall began in August 2016, when he became entangled in a cross-state drug operation spanning both Omaha, Nebraska, and Council Bluffs, Iowa. The investigation, a joint effort by multiple law enforcement agencies, revealed a calculated scheme to pump methamphetamine into the Southern District of Iowa. Holden admitted to his participation in the conspiracy when he pleaded guilty on November 29, 2016.
This wasn’t some small-time operation. The probe, led by the Southwest Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force, exposed a network of drug traffickers moving significant quantities of the highly addictive substance. The Omaha Police Department, Council Bluffs Police Department, and Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office all contributed resources and manpower to dismantle the operation and bring those responsible to justice.
Following his release from prison, Holden won’t be a free man. He’s facing a mandatory five-year term of supervised release, a constant reminder of his crimes and an attempt to keep him from re-entering the world of drug trafficking. The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa meticulously prosecuted the case, ensuring Holden faced the full weight of the law.
The sentence serves as a stark warning to those involved in the illicit drug trade: the risks are high, and the consequences are severe. Federal authorities are increasingly focused on dismantling these conspiracies, recognizing the devastating impact methamphetamine has on communities. Holden’s case is just one example of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the Midwest.
