KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A grim chapter unfolded in federal court today as Michael Anthony Garrett, 32, of Kansas City, Kan., received a 20-year sentence without parole for his illegal firearm possession and intent to distribute marijuana.
Garrett’s conviction stems from an incident on December 28, 2014, where he was found asleep at the wheel of a Dodge Caravan, parked at Grand Slam gas station. An off-duty police officer discovered him slumped over, with a loaded Glock .45-caliber pistol and drug paraphernalia in plain view.
Upon waking, Garrett faced arrest after officers uncovered 10.3 grams of marijuana packaged for distribution, a digital scale, and a firearm holster.
The defendant’s previous convictions for aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and eluding a police officer made his current charges even more severe under federal law.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jeffrey Q. McCarther and Alison Dunning prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
This sentence serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences for illegal firearm possession and drug trafficking in the federal system.
