A federal judge in San Antonio handed down a 10-year prison sentence to 32-year-old Alejandro Gomez-Cervantes, convicted of distributing fentanyl, a highly addictive and deadly synthetic opioid.
Gomez-Cervantes, a resident of San Antonio, was arrested in 2023 after a joint investigation by the DEA and the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office uncovered a large-scale fentanyl trafficking operation. Authorities seized over 1.5 kilograms of fentanyl, worth approximately $750,000 on the street.
According to court documents, Gomez-Cervantes was the primary supplier of fentanyl to multiple dealers in the San Antonio area. The investigation revealed that he had been trafficking fentanyl for at least two years, resulting in multiple overdose deaths and near-deaths in the community.
Fentanyl is a potent opioid that is 50-100 times more potent than morphine. Even small amounts can be deadly, and the DEA has warned of the growing threat of fentanyl-related overdose deaths across the United States.
Gomez-Cervantes was charged with one count of distributing fentanyl, a felony offense that carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. He pleaded guilty to the charge in February 2025 and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Fred Biery on March 15, 2025.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracy Thompson, who praised the work of law enforcement agencies in bringing Gomez-Cervantes to justice. ‘This sentence sends a strong message that those who traffic deadly fentanyl will face serious consequences,’ Thompson said in a statement. ‘We will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle fentanyl trafficking operations in the San Antonio area.’
Gomez-Cervantes’s sentence is a significant blow to the fentanyl trafficking network in San Antonio, and law enforcement officials say it will help to reduce the flow of deadly fentanyl into the community. The case serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of fentanyl trafficking on families and communities across the United States.
