Joseph Percoco Guilty of $300K Corruption Scheme

Joseph Percoco, former executive aide and campaign manager to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, was convicted Tuesday on multiple counts of corruption after taking more than $300,000 in cash bribes. The money came from private interests seeking to influence state business, traded directly for Percoco’s political clout—power he wielded not as an elected official, but as a behind-the-scenes operator with unchecked access.

Federal prosecutors painted Percoco as a shadow kingpin who turned his proximity to power into personal profit. Over several years, he accepted payments from real estate developers and energy executives in exchange for steering state contracts and easing regulatory pressure. At trial, evidence revealed envelopes of cash, coded conversations, and shell companies used to funnel the illicit payments—all while Percoco maintained his role as a trusted adviser to one of the most powerful politicians in the state.

U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman delivered a blistering statement following the verdict: “Joseph Percoco was found guilty of taking over $300,000 in cash bribes by selling something priceless that was not his to sell – the sacred obligation to honestly and faithfully serve the citizens of New York.” Berman called the crimes a betrayal of democratic principles, stressing that government influence is not a commodity for sale.

The case exposed the rot of pay-to-play politics in Albany’s corridors. Witnesses testified that Percoco used his status to intervene in state decisions, including a multimillion-dollar economic development grant, all while officially on a leave of absence from state government. Prosecutors argued that his campaign role allowed him to operate in the gray zone—unaccountable, unwatched, and untouchable—until now.

Percoco was found guilty of conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud, wire fraud, and soliciting bribes. He faces years behind bars when sentenced, with federal guidelines suggesting a significant prison term. His co-defendant, a corporate executive tied to the bribery network, was also convicted and awaits sentencing.

The verdict marks the latest in a string of high-profile corruption cases to rock New York’s political machine. Federal authorities say the crackdown is far from over. “We will continue relentlessly to bring to justice those public officials who violate their oaths by engaging in this especially offensive misconduct,” Berman warned. For now, the message is clear: access to power comes at a price—but only the public should be paying it.
