Bryan Smith, Crack Cocaine Conspiracy, PA 2024

Bryan Smith, 24, of Braddock, PA, is headed to federal prison for 18 months after being convicted of conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine in Pittsburgh’s violent Greenway Projects. The sentence, handed down by Senior U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab, marks the first in a sweeping federal crackdown targeting one of the city’s most entrenched drug corridors.

The case centers on a 2017 wiretap investigation led by the FBI and DEA, zeroing in on the GBK street gang and its grip on narcotics distribution in the West End housing complex. From November 2017 to June 2018, Smith and a network of co-conspirators flooded the Greenway Projects with crack cocaine, exploiting the neighborhood’s vulnerability and fueling a cycle of addiction and violence.

Court records reveal that intercepted communications and field surveillance painted a damning picture of Smith’s role in the operation. Federal agents documented repeated drug transactions, coordinated drop-offs, and coded language typical of organized street trafficking. Smith, though not the highest-ranking figure, was identified as a consistent and active distributor within the conspiracy.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Tonya Sulia Goodman and Yvonne Saadi prosecuted the case with a no-frills approach, emphasizing the threat posed by sustained drug operations in public housing. At sentencing, Judge Schwab stated the 18-month term was “sufficient but not greater than necessary” to meet the goals of punishment, deterrence, and public safety.

This prosecution is part of a larger takedown that has charged 28 individuals in connection with the Greenway drug network. The investigation was funded by the federal Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Program (OCDETF), which enables interagency coordination between federal, state, and local forces to dismantle major trafficking enterprises.

U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady praised the collaborative effort behind the conviction, naming the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, Pennsylvania State Police, Robinson Township, Stowe Township, Wilkinsburg Borough, McKees Rocks Police, and the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office as key partners. The Greenway takedown signals a continued federal push to dismantle drug networks embedded in urban housing zones.
