In a shocking turn of events, Stephen Salamak, a 38-year-old former corrections officer from Lodi, New Jersey, has pleaded guilty to receiving images of child sexual abuse.
The disgraced ex-officer’s dark secret was uncovered by a thorough investigation led by special agents of the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations.
According to court documents, Salamak used email to seek and obtain images of child pornography, including graphic depictions of prepubescent children.
The receipt of child pornography charge carries a maximum potential penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Salamak will also be required to register as a sex offender, a fate worse than prison for this convicted felon.
U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito commended the efforts of the Department of Homeland Security, stating that their investigation led to today’s guilty plea.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Danielle Alfonzo Walsman, Chief of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Public Protection Unit in Newark, will lead the prosecution of Salamak.
Defense counsel Brian Neary Esq., of Hackensack, New Jersey, will represent the disgraced ex-officer in court.
Salamak’s guilty plea is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of child pornography on innocent victims.
As a former corrections officer, Salamak’s position of trust has been irreparably damaged.
His sentence is currently scheduled for November 15, 2018.
