TOPEKA, Kan. — The grim halls of Seaman High School were shrouded in shock as basketball coach Jeffrey D. Pierce, 40, faced a federal charge today for sexually exploiting minors. According to U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister, Pierce stands accused of two counts of producing child pornography and one count of possessing child pornography.
The harrowing allegations against Pierce suggest that he engaged in the production of child pornography on March 10 and March 14, 2020. The possession charge alleges an offense on September 2, 2020. If convicted, the coach could be sentenced to a minimum of 15 years and a maximum of 30 years in federal prison for each production count, while the possession count could carry up to 10 years imprisonment and a fine reaching $250,000.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted the investigation that led to Pierce’s charges. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Hunting is now prosecuting the case against the accused coach.
As with all criminal cases, Jeffrey D. Pierce is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The current indictments merely outline allegations of criminal conduct.
This disturbing case serves as yet another stark reminder of the dark underbelly that can lurk within seemingly unsuspecting institutions. It also underscores the critical role that law enforcement plays in uncovering and preventing such heinous acts.
