WICHITA, KAN – The grimy details of a staggering embezzlement scheme were laid bare today as Jean Trummel, 42, from Winfield, Kan., faced federal charges for allegedly siphoning over $599,000 from the William Newton Memorial Hospital Credit Union.
Trummel is accused of committing the crime between November 2010 and November 2017 in Cowley County. According to the indictment, she masterminded a scheme that involved creating fictitious loans and converting the funds for her personal gain.
Should she be convicted, Trummel could face up to 30 years in federal prison and a fine of $1 million. The investigation was led by the FBI, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron Smith taking the lead in the prosecution.
This is not the only case making headlines today. Gina Hutson, 58, from Wichita, Kan., faces one count of bank fraud for using her company-issued credit card to pay for personal expenses between March 2011 and May 2018. Hutson too could face up to 30 years in prison and a fine of $1 million if convicted.
Kathy De La Torre, 24, Wichita, Kan., is charged with distributing fentanyl, possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, unlawful possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. She faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years and a fine of $1 million on each drug count, plus at least five years for the firearm charge.
Hernan Romero, 25, Goodland, Kan., stands accused of misusing a Social Security number from 2016 to 2020. He could face up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000 if convicted.
