Florida Man in ‘BAD’ Gear Nabbed for Jan. 6 Capitol Breach

WASHINGTON — The gritty narrative of January 6, 2021’s Capitol breach added another chapter today as James Beeks, a Florida man and affiliate of the Oath Keepers, was hauled into custody on felony obstruction charges. The 49-year-old Orlando native disrupted the joint session of Congress that was counting electoral votes when he joined a mob storming the U.S. Capitol building.

Beeks, donning a Michael Jackson “BAD” world tour jacket and a black helmet, was part of the infamous group that breached the Capitol grounds and clashed with law enforcement. Court documents show he was among those who tried to muscle through officers guarding a hallway leading to the Senate chamber. When pushed back, Beeks regrouped in the Rotunda before leaving at 3:04 p.m., just minutes after the initial breach.

Arrested in Milwaukee and facing a misdemeanor charge for unlawfully entering a restricted area, Beeks made his first appearance in the Eastern District of Wisconsin. He was released on bond pending further legal action.

The prosecution is led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section. The FBI’s Tampa Field Office is spearheading the investigation, with valuable support from its Milwaukee Field Office and the U.S. Capitol Police.

Since Jan. 6, over 675 individuals have been arrested across the nation for crimes related to the breach, including more than 210 who faced charges of assaulting law enforcement. The investigation is ongoing.

Citizens with information are encouraged to call 1-800-CALL-FBI or visit tips.fbi.gov. Remember: the charges in this case are merely allegations and Beeks is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
