Local Doctor Indicted on Tax Evasion Charges

A 48-year-old Baton Rouge physician has been hit with a hefty tax bill – and now faces a federal indictment for tax evasion. Melissa Rose Barrett, a resident of both Baton Rouge and Clive, Iowa, was recently charged with one count of tax evasion by a federal grand jury.

According to the indictment, Barrett, who owned and operated Stat Care Clinics, L.L.C. d/b/a Central Stat Care, failed to pay her taxes for the years 2007 through 2017. The total amount she owed, excluding interest and penalties, comes out to approximately $1.6 million.

But here’s the kicker: Barrett didn’t just ignore her tax bill – she continued to live large while her creditors waited. Court documents show that she spent millions on luxury items, including a boat, a personal residence, real property, an airplane, and other high-end purchases totaling at least $6.7 million.

The Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigations Unit, is leading the investigation, with Assistant United States Attorney Edward H. Warner taking the reins on prosecution.

As is often the case with tax evasion charges, the indictment is just the beginning of a long and potentially grueling process for Barrett. She has pleaded not guilty to the pending charges, and will have to wait until trial to see if she’ll be found guilty.

It’s worth noting that an indictment is not a conviction – and Barrett is presumed innocent until proven otherwise. But with millions of dollars on the line, it’s clear that the stakes are high.

We’ll continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available. In the meantime, it’s a sobering reminder of the consequences of tax evasion – and the importance of paying your fair share.
